With as many as 73% of recruiters looking at your social media profiles when analyzing job candidates, now is the perfect time of year to clean up your Facebook profile. Here are 5 simple things to do in order to make your Facebook profile attractive to the recruiters who are considering you for a job.
1. Update your Facebook profile picture.
Take a minute to look at your Facebook profile picture. Would you mind your future boss looking at that photo? Are you in a swimsuit? This Facebook profile picture doesn’t have to be a feature photo of you in formal attire or a professional headshot, but make sure you represent yourself in a way that shows off your best side.
2. Update your Facebook bio.
Facebook bios are one of the first things a recruiter looks at when doing a quick scan of a social media profile. Make sure your bio is free of provocative language or inappropriate comments. Update the bio with accurate contact info, and most importantly, make sure the bio represents you and the brand you want for yourself.
3. Hide your tagged photos.
Many of us use Facebook as our preferred photo storage website. But, if you’ve been on Facebook since 2005, chances are that you have some tagged photos of yourself that you wouldn’t want a recruiter to see. While Facebook’s settings allow you to block users from seeing your tagged pics, be sure to take the time and go through your photos to see if there’s anything you wouldn’t want appearing on a future employer’s computer screen.
4. Update your privacy settings.
You can update your Facebook privacy settings so that only certain people can find you in a search. You can control what people see when they view your profile. Take a minute to go through Facebook’s privacy settings and turn off any privacy setting that you wouldn’t want an employer to see about yourself.
5. Monitor your status updates.
Watch what you say on Facebook. The last thing you want is to offend your future employer with something you didn’t mean to be taken the wrong way. Either control your privacy settings, or carefully edit your status updates to be Switzerland neutral when conducting a job search.
Facebook can be a great tool to promote yourself in a positive light for employers, so make sure that you are using it to your advantage. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Y Scouts on our Facebook page.
